Saturday Selections: Absolutely Fabulous (TV show)

Happy Saturday!

Normally Saturday Selections is for something new I’ve read, heard, eaten or visited over the past week, but this Saturday I’m sharing with you a favorite of mine from many years ago and that, whenever in need of hilarious entertainment, I still pop into the DVD player: the British comedy TV series Absolutely Fabulous!

About the Show

Ab Fab, as the cool kids call it, is just so wrong and that’s what makes it so great. Eddy (short for Edina played by the hilarious Jennifer Saunders) is a middle-aged mom living with her daughter Saffy (short for Saffron). Eddy, oh how to describe Eddy…she wants to be fashionable and although she does wear top designers, the clothes don’t quite fit her age or her body. Her outfits and attempts to be hip would be enough to fuel the show’s laughter engine.

Eddy’s best friend Patsy (played by Joanne Lumley), a former model of an uncertain age lives on nothing but booze, cigarettes and drugs…and is the queen of peer-pressure as she gets Eddy to join in her debauchery and sometimes uses Eddy as a guinea pig for medical procedures.

Stuck between with these two ladies is Saffy, a studious, conservatively-dressed girl who wants nothing more than a well-behaved mother, or at least a sober one that doesn’t care about trends. What she gets is Eddy…and some frequent verbal abuse from Patsy.

You can see more about Ab Fab and catch some clips at BBC America

Why It’s Great

If you’re tired of the political correctness of EVERYTHING these days, you really have to give this show a try – or watch it again if it’s been a while since you’ve seen it. There’s slapstick humor (usually Eddy falling down stairs or being poured out of a car), but there’s also fast and biting humor with some terrific exchanges that only the Brits could get away with. And, of course, there’s plenty of making fun of trends and people trying desperately hard to be in the in crowd.

Rather than go on about the show, here’s a sample of clips to give you an idea of what you might be getting into…

Thanks everyone and have an Absolutely Fabulous weekend!
