Saturday Selections: Phillip Phillips Behind the Light (music)

Happy Saturday Readers!

Yes, this week’s post is about an American Idol winner, but before you think I’m some reality TV addict, let me just tell you I’m not since most of these shows are ridiculous pieces of brain rot.

That said, flipping channels one night a couple years ago, I came across American Idol and a young man was belting out a tune and he was good. Really good and you could see the passion he had for what he was doing. I was hooked on watching the rest of the season and the guy won. That winner was Phillip Phillips.

Despite all the insurance commercials that play only one of his songs, Phillips was no one hit wonder. His first album was good with plenty of entertaining songs, but the sound to all the tunes was pretty much the same and felt a little lacking. That could have doomed a less talented musician and I have to admit I was a little reluctant when I heard he had a new album coming out…

…until I heard the first release, “Raging Fire.” Then, the album (Behind the Light) was quickly added to my Must Listen list. This week I finally was able to give it a listen. I ended up listening to it over and over (and it’s currently playing yet again as I type this).

In this second album, Phillips seems to have gained some independence and willingness to try out a few different sounds. The result is SUPERB and really showcases the gallons of talent he has. And since it’s easier for you to listen and watch than it is for me to type at you about music, I’ve posted the video of the first release from Behind the Light below.
