Writers Just Wanna Have Fun

This week’s Weekly Writing Challenge from WordPress’s Daily Post asks bloggers to tap into their inner Weird Al Yankovic and parody a familiar song. They gave Cyndi Lauper’s “Girls Just Want To Have Fun” and Weird Al’s “Girls Just Want To Have Lunch” as examples.

At first I thought, “This challenge isn’t for me, ” mainly because nothing popped into my head of how I could relate this challenge to writing. Then, when I was in bed trying to get to sleep last night (with the damn Lauper song stuck in my head), lyrics took hold and forced me out of bed to jot them down.

Although what I came up with is completely silly, this challenge does prove that sometimes you need to step back from your writing when you can’t figure out how to word a facial expression, can’t figure out a piece of dialogue, or are struggling with a hard scene. Once you stop thinking about it, idea will come – usually at the most inconvenient time.

Ideas do not tend to linger; I think I read once that you have two minutes or less to capture an idea before it floats away (idea seem very much like fairies). When the idea fairies do arrive, stop whatever you’re doing (unless you’re a surgeon or paramedic), grab whatever piece of paper is handy (unless it’s your marriage certificate or your child’s diploma), and get those ideas down.

This challenge also proves I get songs stuck in my head WAY too easily (I can’t tell you how long I had Billy Joel’s “Uptown Girl” in my head – oh the horror).

Okay, ready for some fun? Alright, here’s my take on “Girls Just Want To Have Fun…The Writer’s Edition” (original lyrics and a little video follow):

  • I sit at home in the middle of the day
  • My notebook yells, “When you gonna finish that page?”
  • Oh novel dear, you know you’re still worth my time
  • But writers just wanna drink wine
  • Oh writers just wanna drink wine
  • An idea comes in the middle of the night
  • My body yells “But you’re tucked in so tight.”
  • Oh, Mr. Sleep I’ll see you some other time
  • But I’ve got to jot down this line
  • And then I’m having some wine
  • That’s all they really want
  • Some wine
  • When the word count goal is fine
  • Writers just want to drink wine

Original Lyrics of “Girls Just Want to Have Fun”

I come home in the morning light
My mother says when you gonna live your life right
Oh mother dear we’re not the fortunate ones
And girls they want to have fun
Oh girls just want to have fun

The phone rings in the middle of the night
My father yells what you gonna do with your life
Oh daddy dear you know you’re still number one
But girls they want to have fun
Oh girls just want to have

That’s all they really want
Some fun
When the working day is done
Girls – they want to have fun
Oh girls just want to have fun
